Roots in the Sky – Blackfriars
The historic Blackfriars Crown Court is being radically reimagined as Roots in the Sky — a visionary 385,000 sq ft development that redefines the connection between work, wellness, and community. Central to its design is a 1.1-acre urban forest, home to 100 trees, 10,000 plants, 1,300 tons of soil, and a rooftop pool heated by waste energy — a bold statement in sustainable architecture.
Blending the original 1960s structure and façade with a hybrid low-carbon CLT and steel frame, the development pioneers deep landscaping with 1.5m soil beds, allowing mature trees to flourish naturally. The project achieved unanimous planning approval from Southwark Council, with strong local support for its environmental and social vision.
Aquascapes were commissioned to design the rooftop glass-bottomed pool, a dramatic architectural feature that will be visible from the ground floor atrium. The design pushes the boundaries of structural and hydraulic engineering, combining innovation and visual impact to create a seamless connection between the rooftop leisure space and the building below.
The Roots in the Sky project exemplifies the future of urban development — where sustainability, technology, and design excellence come together. Aquascapes is proud to contribute to this landmark transformation with a pool design that reflects the project’s progressive spirit and bold ambition.
