Soho House – Brighton

The ‘Beach House’ in Brighton was the 2nd project for Soho House that Aquascapes was nominated pool contractor.

The banana pool mosaic was designed by David Shrigley and he is a British Visual Artist who lives in Brighton. His works belong in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art, The Tate and The Thyssen‐ Bornemisza Art Contemporary.

The banana, rendered in bright yellow mosaic tiles with splodges of brown, curls round the bottom of the pool, which overlooks the seafront to the east of Brighton pier where the area known as Kemp Town begins. Around the rim of the pool are the words: “The moment has arrived the banana is ripe”.

The design is taken from a painting Shrigley created last year. But, he says, “an over-ripe banana, with its decadent sweetness, is a metaphor for Kemptown. The banana is one of those ones that you’ve had in your ruck sack all day… it tastes good, it’s the perfect banana. But you don’t want to leave it there any longer. Eat it now.”

Apart from the yellow and brown tiles used for the banana, the rest of the pool has aqua blue coloured tiles. The pool is an infinity modular design and was constructed offsite.
